| The war in Ukraine sparked a global food crisis. One year later, here’s where things stand. |

Just over a year ago, I reflected on the global food crisis sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In this brief update, I share reasons to be hopeful about the global response and highlight areas where much more effort is needed. Last year, I wrote that food relief should be provided to everyone at risk. I also cautioned against price hikes and export bans that could jeopardize global food markets. Fortunately, food relief has reached some who need it. The United Nations World Food Programme raised a record US$14.2 billion in 2022. Governments kept borders open, and as a result, trade between African countries has increased by 3% to 4%, with food flowing more freely across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, for example. Read more

The Food Prices for Nutrition platform provides indicators on the cost and affordability of a healthy diet and other dietary standards in countries across the world. These metrics help us monitor progress towards making healthy diets more accessible and affordable, and subsequently guide policies in the context of food security and good nutrition for all. They also supports efforts within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030 (SDG 2). | The Global Food Crisis: Causes and consequences |

|
The COVID-19 pandemic has put health systems around the world under massive stress. At the onset of the pandemic, many governments put various containment measures in place, restricting the free movements of people both within and between countries added by closing non-essential businesses and schools. These policies have also had an impact on global food systems by limiting international food supply, disrupting local supply chains, leading to economic slowdowns and reduced accessibility of food. Food systems in Africa have particularly been hit, due to a limited ability to respond to shocks and stress - reinforced by structural deficiencies in the production and distribution of food. These are caused by inadequate infrastructure, high transaction costs, as well as malfunctioning credit and insurance markets. Read more

| Funding opportunity coming soon: ADR UK Research Fellowships using ADR England flagship data |

ADR UK will soon invite applications for ADR UK Research Fellowships using ADR England flagship datasets. Grants will be available for projects up to a value of £175,000 (full economic cost). These Research Fellowships will be funded for up to 18 months in duration. Applications must make use of ADR England flagship linked datasets, held in the Office for National Statistics Secure Research Service or other ADR UK trusted research environments. These datasets are detailed in the ADR England flagship dataset brochure, which will be updated when the funding call opens for applications on Wednesday 5 July 2023. Read more

The International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) has announced its 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) to take place on 2-7 August 2024 in New Delhi, India, on the overall theme “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems.” All submissions will be due on 15 January 2024 via the online submission system, which will be opened in August 2023.
ICAE 2024 is organized by IAAE jointly with the Agricultural Economics Research Association (India), the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). | Sustainably Growing Africa’s Food Systems AGRA’s Five-Year Strategy |

Africa’s food systems are in urgent need of transformation. Most African countries lack the resilience for both the immediate global food crisis - spurred by the war in Ukraine - and the longer-term impacts of climate change and land degradation. Whilst African agricultural productivity - measured in the output value of farmers in real terms - increased by 13% between 2015 and 2020, it remains the lowest in the world1. To illustrate, 1 in 5 people in Africa were still malnourished in 2020, and the current fertilizer shortage creates further vulnerability. Severe land degradation is negatively impacting nearly half of all productive land on the continent. Read more
