Dear Members, As we draw near to the upcoming deadline for the submission of Contributed Papers and Organized Symposium for the AAAE & AEASA Conference 2023, we wish to extend a reminder to you once more. The deadline, March 07, 2023, is rapidly approaching, and it is crucial that you submit your contributions in a timely manner to avoid any last-minute dash. We are delighted to announce that grants will be made available to support the participation costs of students and early-career researchers whose papers have been accepted into the conference program. To take advantage of this opportunity, please take a moment to review the Sponsorships tab on our website and also note that our association is working tirelessly to secure additional sponsorships. For those who are interested in receiving support from the donors who have pledged support, please follow the procedure outlined below: • If you are applying for JRC or PARI sponsorships, kindly indicate your interest on the paper you submit. All provisionally accepted papers with this indication will be sent to the relevant institution for review, and successful applicants will be notified for further communication. Even if you are not successful in this round, you will still be eligible for the soon-to-be-available early-career scholarships. Furthermore, if you are an early-career scholar (under 40 years old, with or without a PhD, or received your PhD after 2013), and your paper has been provisionally accepted, you will be invited to apply for a scholarship, subject to the availability of funds. It is important to submit your contributions by the deadline to ensure that there is sufficient time for peer review and communication with the authors of accepted papers. Your participation and support are critical to the success of the conference and we eagerly anticipate your submissions. | AAAE & AEASA Conference: Sponsorships |

We are thrilled to announce that grants will be available to cover the participation costs for students and early-career researchers whose papers will be accepted for the AAAE & AEASA Conference. This is a great opportunity for students and early-career researchers to share their research findings, network with colleagues in their field, and gain valuable exposure. To be eligible for the grants, students and early-career researchers must have had their papers accepted for presentation at the conference and MUST be duly registered members of the AAAE or AEASA. The grants will cover the costs of some of the following items; registration, travel, and accommodation. We encourage eligible students and early-career researchers to apply for the grants when the application window opens, and we look forward to welcoming you to the conference. | PANAP Travel Award for papers in the area of sustainable food systems transformations |
|

In the context of the Pan-African Network for Economic Analysis of Policies (PANAP), the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) is seeking to sponsor the travel costs of selected presenters at the joint AAAE & AEASA 2023 conference in Durban. The awardees will be selected from those Contributed Papers accepted to the conference. The papers should fall within the area of “Sustainable food systems transformations”, with no restrictions on the methodologies employed. At the conference, the selected papers will be part of the offering of the JRC. The UN Food Systems Summit 2021 called for food systems that are healthier, fairer and more sustainable – beneficial for both current and future generations. The shortcomings of our current food systems, from environmentally degrading agricultural production systems to imbalanced supply chains to food loss and waste, have become clearer over time. Shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have further exposed its fragilities. Scientific evidence is needed to identify feasible and scalable solutions. The proposed Invited Panel for this sponsorship aims to identify examples of sustainable approaches and practices at the farm, regional or national level to enhancing climate change resilience/adaptation and mitigation, fostering an agroecological transition and limiting environmental services degradation and deforestation. Submissions by researchers at African institutions, and especially by female researchers, are strongly encouraged. Presenters wishing to be considered for this sponsorship should follow the normal conference submission process by including the sentence "To be considered for the JRC travel sponsorship" on the front page of their manuscripts. | PARI (Program of Accompanying Research for Agricultural Innovation) Grants |

|
PARI (Program of Accompanying Research for Agricultural Innovation) will sponsor the participation of ten African students at the AAAE & AEASA conference in Durban. The PARI research project focuses on improving agricultural growth and food security in Africa through innovation and will fully fund the students' participation in the conference. Ten accepted papers written by African students that relate to the topics of Agricultural innovation and Food security will be awarded the grants. In addition, the successful awardees will be invited to attend a PARI side event during the conference. Read more

| AAEA (Agricultural and Applied Economics Association) Trust Award |
|

|
The AAEA Trust is providing USD 3,000 in funding to support the AAAE & AEASA Conference 2023 in Durban. This funding will go towards two Early Career Professional Travel Grants. The AAEA Trust is dedicated to supporting the work of agricultural and applied economists by funding programs and initiatives that advance the profession.Read more

The World Food Prize Foundation is now accepting nominations for its 2024 World Food Prize Laureate!
The esteemed World Food Prize is awarded annually for an exceptional individual achievement that advances global development through food systems.
Most recently, the award was presented to Cynthia Rosenzweig, a NASA scientist whose research has advanced the world’s understanding of the impact of climate change on food production. Other previous Laureates include 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus, current President of the African Development Bank Akinwumi Adesina, and the WHO’s Special Envoy for COVID-19 David Nabarro.

The Right Livelihood College (RLC) offers a DAAD-funded PhD research scholarship on Agro-ecology among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa: improving use efficiency and conserving natural ecosystems while enhancing smallholders’ livelihoods.
The Right Livelihood College (RLC) is a global transdisciplinary research and education initiative of universities and the "Alternative Nobel Prize", the Right Livelihood Foundation (RLF). Supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the RLC Campus Bonn at the Center for Development (ZEF), University of Bonn, Germany, together with the Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) in Nairobi, Kenya, have jointly conceptualised this project. The Biovision Foundation, the founder of BvAT, was awarded with the Right Livelihood Award in 2013. In this context, we offer a 3.5-year PhD scholarship for candidates from sub-Saharan Africa to carry out an empirical applied PhD research project related to the topic “Agroecology among smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa: improving use efficiency and conserving natural ecosystems while enhancing smallholders’ livelihoods”. | Three sorghum and three pearl millet varieties developed by ICRISAT in Nigeria |

ICRISAT, in collaboration with Nigeria's National Agricultural Research System - Lake Chad Research Institute (for pearl millet) and the Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University (for sorghum) - has developed three sorghum and three pearl millet varieties, which have now been released promising better nutrition and higher yields for farmers. The three sorghum and three pearl millet varieties are suited to the country's Sudano-Sahelian/semi-arid ecologies and are designed to be high-yielding, nutritionally enhanced, and well-adapted to local conditions. | Wheat gene discovery could feed our overheated world |

Wheat now provides 20% of the calories consumed by humans every day, but its production is under threat. Thanks to human-induced global heating, our planet faces a future of increasingly severe heat waves, droughts and wildfires that could devastate harvests in future, triggering widespread famine in their wake. But the crisis could be averted thanks to remarkable research now being undertaken by researchers at the John Innes Centre in Norwich. They are working on a project to make wheat more resistant to heat and drought. Such efforts have proved to be extremely tricky but are set to be the subject of a new set of trials in a few weeks as part of a project in which varieties of wheat – created, in part, by gene-editing technology – will be planted in field trials in Spain. | Africa’s agriculture potential can contribute to end world hunger |

Africa can feed today’s hungry and be the world’s breadbasket. It has that potential. Unfortunately, one can’t eat potential. Potential, backed by enabling policies, a conducive business environment, and innovative technologies, is what creates harvests, nutritious food on the table, and wealth across agriculture’s vast value chain. The transformation of Africa’s food production is critical for achieving Zero Hunger — a key UN Sustainable Development Goal. The African Union’s 2014 Malabo Declaration committed African states to end hunger by 2025 through “accelerated agricultural growth and transformation for shared prosperity and improved livelihoods”.
