IAAE AWARDS 2021

The IAAE Award is a prize that provides both a Certificate of Achievement and a cash donation to the winner, presented during the International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) event. During this year's Virtual #ICAE2021 conference, four prizes will be awarded: Carl K. Eicher Award for best doctoral dissertation on Africa, T W Schultz Prize for Best Oral Contributed Paper, Nils Westermarck Prize for Best Poster and Uma Lele Prize for Best Contributed Paper on Gender. READ MORE

27 Inspiring Women Reshaping the Food System

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread, the virus disproportionately impacted women, whose care responsibilities increased as access to local markets decreased. Despite this, they’ve been ignored in nearly half of the COVID-19 relief plans analyzed in a recent report by CARE. It’s clear that we ignore women in the food system at our own peril. The FAO reports that if women farmers had the same access to resources as male farmers, they could bring 100-150 million people out of hunger. Research from the FAO also shows time and time again that gender equality opens doors for entire communities to improve nutrition security as well as social and economic well-being. READ MORE

TAAT’s Deployment of Sheep Fattening Technologies Improves Livelihoods in Ethiopia

Demand for livestock products in Africa is increasing, rapidly fuelled by the growing population, urbanisation and improved incomes leading to shifts in diets towards high-value commodities such as meat and milk. Livestock is a source of readily convertible cash and insurance against crop failures. In Ethiopia, livestock is an integral part of the agricultural economy as almost all farmers own some livestock. READ MORE

Revival of groundnut production continues to change lives of smallholder farmers in Northern Nigeria

In a remarkable turnaround, farmers in Northern Nigeria organized themselves into innovation platforms, and with support from the Tropical Legumes (TL) project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, turned into successful groundnut seed producers in 2011. The impacts of those actions are felt even today, with farmers continuing to adopt improved variety seeds and good agronomic practices to obtain high yields that help them improve their nutrition as well as incomes in the community. READ MORE

AGRA Supports Creation of a Vibrant Seed System in Rwanda: Rwanda Agriculture Yearbook 2020 – 2021

50x2030 launches data use grant competition for researchers in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Georgia, Senegal

The 50x2030 Initiative is sponsoring a competition for novel research projects that use 50x2030 data. Small grants – from US$1,000-$10,000 – will be issued for projects that employ 50x2030 survey data to generate practical research that can be applied to national policymaking, program (re)design or investment decisions. The Initiative will then feature outputs of the supported research at a virtual conference in November 2021 and through other outlets. Local researchers in five partner countries-- Cambodia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Georgia and Senegal– will be eligible to apply. READ MORE
